Never fear eyeglass wearers the Vixen Lanthanum is here. With an extra long eye relief and a 65-degree field of view this eyepiece makes a lot of sense for a lot of people in the market for telescope eyepieces.

The 30mm Lanthanum is focused on long and comfortable viewing sessions from top to bottom. The name itself includes important information about your potential experience with this eyepiece. Lanthanum is a metallic element that occurs in nature. It is a rare earth mineral that can be used in glass to reduce aberrations.

All the field of view in the world is wasted if you have to do complicated acrobatics to see most of it, or are completely unable to see much of it. That is where many glasses wearers find themselves with some of the wide field eyepieces. Being able to pull away from the eyepiece a little bit more than usual will lead to a more comfortable experience for everyone and a more rewarding experience for those who are wearing glasses.

Admittedly there is less risk of image breakdown across a smaller field but this eyepiece’s reputation for offering a sharp image all the way across is still a great feature.

Multiple coating on the 30mm Lanthanum elements should help provide a quality image every time. The multi-layer coating is applied to the entire lens. A soft rubber eyecup should add to the creature comforts of this equipment.

The 30mm Lanthanum is compatible with 48mm screw-in astronomical filters so you can add further variations to your viewing experience.

This eyepiece comes with dust caps for both the front and rear so you can protect your investment.

The shape is tapered at both ends and includes a textured gripping ring, making it less likely you will drop this eyepiece.

Vixen’s customer support is a little weak. Email inquiries seem to go into an abyss. If you call you must have your date of purchase and warranty on hand.

The website offers little information on their products. Their customer service seems geared to current customers rather than potential customers.

Summary:

The 30mm Lanthanum is worth your consideration if you wear glasses, and even if you don’t. The high quality glass and coating should lead to some pretty eye-popping views. The field of view is smaller than some of the other telescope eyepieces we looked at, but that’s not the only qualification for great views.

A wide field of view is amazing as long as you can see it. When you are wearing glasses you cannot always see it. Catching a glimpse of 65 degrees of sky through some high quality glass will be a very fulfilling experience and the 30mm Lanthanum can offer you that.
