Scope City is one of our top rated online telescope stores. Many of the most popular name brands in optics and telescopes can be found at Scope City. Scope City has been in business for over 25 years and is based out of Simi Valley, California. They also operate a handful of shops around California and one in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Scope City’s mission is to meet the high standards that customers expect while continually providing the expertise and guidance in choosing quality products at discount prices. It's this commitment that has earned Scope City a top spot in our matrix of online telescope stores.
- Established and Credible: 25 Years in Business
- Large Selection
- Caters to Professional and Amateur Users
As their name implies, Scope City sells anything and everything related to telescopes. Their selection includes all of the top names in telescopes such as Mead, Celestron, and Orion just to name a few. The most popular styles of telescopes are all available like catadioptric, reflecting, refracting, solar telescopes, optical tubes, Dobsonian and Newtonian.
Scope City sells to both beginners and professionals. In fact, their website even has sections that cater to both types of users, making it a little easier to find what you’re looking for or at least allow you to sort telescopes by price. In fact, they sell telescopes that cost more than $20,000. That’s hardly equipment that your average beginning stargazer would consider purchasing.
Scope City sells all the accessories that you will need for your new telescope. Anyone who uses a telescope can appreciate the importance of a good mount, tripod or even a case. Scope City also sells a large variety of eyepieces, Barlow lenses, filters, and counterweights.
Ease of Use
Scope City’s website is very similar to many of the other online telescope stores that we reviewed. There is a huge wealth of text and subheadings to direct you to the product you’re looking for. In Scope City’s case, this is absolutely overwhelming. Hundreds of links clamor for your attention, making it difficult to wade through them all to find the telescope you want. The pages are very long which also makes the site more difficult to navigate.
Scope City accepts most major credit cards including Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express. Debit cards that bear one of these symbols are also accepted forms of payment. Paying with a credit card is typically the quickest way to get your order shipped.
Scope City also accepts payments via PayPal and Google Checkout. This makes it easier for those that don’t want to pay with a credit card to still place an order without much hassle.
Scope City started out small by a group of people who were passionate about scopes and telescopes in small telescope stores. Scope City tries to maintain that same passion for telescopes today and offers their customers a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
Customers may return an item they are not completely satisfied with within 15 days for a full refund minus shipping charges.
Customers of Scope City may contact them via telephone, mail, regular mail, or using their inquiry tool which will usually result in an email being sent back. If you are fortunate enough to live near one of their telescope stores you may also just pop in and pay them a visit.
If you need to cancel an order it will be difficult. Scope City processes orders very quickly and once an order begins the shipping process, it can’t be cancelled. Sometimes this happens within minutes.
Scope City charges for shipping on most orders. Occasionally they will offer certain products that do qualify for free shipping. There really is no way to determine which products will qualify for free shipping so it is best to assume that you will pay shipping on your order.
Once an order has shipped Scope City lets customers track the progress of their order by giving them a tracking number. Once the order has left Scope City’s warehouse they no longer have control over the order’s status.
Customers who live outside the lower 48 states are advised to contact Scope City before placing an order. The total shipping charge displayed on the checkout page is not accurate. Scope City assumes that if you place an order to be shipped outside the lower 48 states you understand you will be charged more.
Scope City will not collect sales tax on orders except for orders being shipped to California. California residents can expect to pay 8.25% sales tax on all orders, unless the order is being shipped outside California.
Scope City lives up to their name of selling quality scopes and optics from their telescope store. They have been in business long enough to know how to keep their customers happy. Be sure to check out our reviews of other great online telescope stores.
